What were your expectations prior to leaving the UK? How has the experience matched your expectations?

I expected several cultural difficulties with being a minority in a country in which I speak little of the language. However the expat community and work were very accommodating and welcoming

What do you like most about China?

I enjoy the living and experiencing a vastly different culture alongside like-minded people.

What has taken a bit of getting used to?

The language and certain customs took a while to acclimatise too. However, a willingness to embrace and accept these challenges has made this a useful and rewarding experience.

What is your accommodation like?

My accommodation is situated in a fantastic central location and everything I need is provided for me by my attentive employers.

How have you got to know people socially (both Chinese and other ex-pats)?

Mainly through being introduced to other foreigners and Chinese from work mates.

What have you found to be the major cultural differences? Have you made any cultural faux-pas?

Using chopsticks whilst eating as the norm has presented me with an unfamiliar cultural experience.

What places have you visited whilst working? How did you travel?

I have yet to travel whilst working. However, I did have the opportunity to travel to Shanghai for New Year which was a terrific experience.

How have you accessed the internet?

My work provides me with internet access both at home and at work.

What is your favourite food?

My favourite Chinese food is Sichuan Pork.

Do you manage to save any money each month? If so, how much on average?

On a monthly basis I save around £200.

What advantages may you have over other graduates when applying for future jobs?

Adaptability and the ability to learn an unfamiliar language.

What piece of advice would you offer to future applicants?

Ensure everything is prepared and you are ready to accept differing cultural experiences.
