You will enrol on a university Mandarin course of your choice, at one of Chengdu’s top universities. Courses are available for complete beginners, right through to those with an advanced command of Mandarin. Typically, you will study for 3 – 4 mornings per week, and will have homework activities to complete during free time.
The ability to speak the world’s most widely spoken language will enhance your CV and give you that competitive edge.
Which university you study at will be dependent on where your host family are located within Chengdu.
Sichuan University
Sichuan University is a first class comprehensive research university in Western China. As one of the national key universities directly under the State Ministry of Education (MOE) Sichuan University is as one of the earliest institutes of higher learning in China, with a history dating back to Sichuan Zhong-Xi Xuetang (Sichuan Chinese and Western School), established in 1896.
The 40,000 student population includes 1,600 international students!
- The School of Overseas Education
The School of Overseas Education teaches international students the Chinese language and culture. It boasts experienced teaching staff, distinctive courses, and advanced facilities. The classes of the Chinese language programme focus on language training, and provide students with knowledge concerning Chinese language skills and necessary background information of Chinese culture. Each class has a maximum of 25 students.
Courses are held from 8:30am to 12:00pm, Monday to Friday, which include comprehensive Chinese reading, listening, writing and speaking classes. In the afternoons extracurricular courses and activities are available, such as Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Black-ink Painting.
Southwestern University of Finance and Economics
The Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) is a top university specialising in finance, economics, and business. It is known for its entrepreneurial characteristics, and was established in 1925. Of its 40,000 students there are 800 international students.
- College of International Education
This department dedicated to international education has excellent teaching facilities and experienced teachers, and a maximum of 15 students per class.
You’ll be able to choose from selective Chinese Culture courses, which may include classes on the Chinese economy, cultural topics (martial arts, shadow boxing, calligraphy), as well as field trips. Campus life means that students quickly make friends, with options for sports, evening shows, performances, tournaments, and many community programmes.
