Chinese New Year party in London: the biggest celebration outside of Asia!

If you’re not too busy with celebrations of the romantic kind on February 14, why not head to London to welcome in the Year of the Monkey with a massive Chinese New Year celebration which will fill most of the West End with music, acrobatics, activities and pyrotechnics. A grand parade featuring ten lion dance teams will set off from Trafalgar Square at 10am, weaving its way up to the buzzing heart of Chinatown. There will also be craft stalls, Chinese food stands and more traditional dance, plus a stage on Shaftesbury Avenue will host local up-and-coming talent. Those with young children can head to Charing Cross Road where there’ll be musical performances from Chinese Young Culture Ambassadors and a martial arts display as well as crafts and workshops.

Trafalgar Square’s party will literally go off with a bang with firecrackers at noon, which will be followed by performances from high pole dances, comedy and acrobatics from Szechuan Opera and a monkey-themed finale involving fireworks and a light projection on Nelson’s Column.

It’s a wonderful introduction to Chinese culture – and best of all, it’s free!
